We are writing today to tell you about an international teaching opportunity available to you right now through our partnership with Teach for India! We’ve expanded our network of cities throughout India to include Bangalore, and we want to send some of our rockstar Teaching Artists to make a big impression!
With this program, Volunteer Artists are matched with TFI Teaching Fellows to focus on ways to incorporate the arts into their curriculum, such as using music to help teach fractions or using theater to help teach language arts. By sharing artistic tools to bolster classroom teaching, ASTEP shows the arts not only have the power to engage children but to excite them about learning.
ASTEP Volunteer Artists also have the opportunity to work with MAYA the MUSICAL during their time at TFI. MAYA is a full length musical about a young princess who must save her kingdom using courage, compassion and wisdom. In the process of teaching a group of students the musical, TFI and ASTEP teachers take students on a journey to discover their own courage, compassion and wisdom and begin to share those values with their families and communities.

Over the course of the past few months, three ASTEP Volunteer Artists dedicated their summer break to supporting Teach for India and the deeply underserved children who attend TFI schools. The main goal was to pair up with TFI Teaching Fellows (teachers in training) and help incorporate the arts into their daily curriculum. For example, using music to teach math and putting on a play to improve reading and collaboration skills.
ASTEP Volunteer Artists also spent time assisting on the production of MAYA the Musical, performed around the country at local Teach for India programs. Hundreds of TFI students perform in the musical, which features an original script and Broadway composed music by ASTEP Volunteer Artists that tells the story of Princess Maya’s whirlwind journey of self-discovery. This musical is the perfect tool that uses the arts to teach important life skills such as communication, confidence and team work.

Featuring an original script and Broadway composed music, The Maya Musical has been a life-changing experience for the 100 low-income students involved. Maya, a partnership between ASTEP and Teach for India, tells the story of Princess Maya’s journey. Tasked to bring light back into her Kingdom, Maya and her friends use the values of courage, compassion and wisdom to lift 3 curses that have been cast on the world.
Like Maya, these children have discovered their brightest light. Thanks to an extensive team of dedicated ASTEP Volunteer Artists, Teach for India staff and scores of supporters, the show opened this month to thunderous applause.

Just one year ago, ASTEP and TFI joined forces to write and produce Maya The Musical, a project performed by low-income students from Pune, India. Teams of Volunteer Artists have spent countless hours composing music, choreographing the scenes, and rehearsing, rehearsing, rehearsing! The show is scheduled to open in November 2014 and then tour around the country, directly impacting all Teach For India’s 32,000 children, through the Maya Book, Curriculum ideas, Film and the 100 Artists Program!

One special art project, led by ASTEP Volunteer Artist Asavari Thatte, selected 5 kids involved in Maya and had them analyze the concept of “story” or “narrative,” and contextualize it against the backdrop of their lived experiences or the narrative of Maya. The second part of the project was illustrating the stories they had written. Below are their final pieces:

When ASTEP was asked to implement an arts institute for 35 students in Pune, India through Teach for India, we jumped at the opportunity! These inspiring students have no arts training and were selected from among hundreds of extremely low-income children to participate in four weeks of arts immersion.
ASTEP Volunteer Artist Nick Dalton joined ASTEP Founder/Executive Director Mary-Mitchell Campbell in leading music, dance and drama classes that taught artistic skills and highlighted important social issues such as health and HIV/AIDS awareness.
In addition, ASTEP conducted a series of workshops for Teach for India teachers in training, focusing on how to incorporate the arts into their curriculum. The arts not only have the power to engage children but excite them about learning — the teachers were thrilled to gain tangible tools to bolster their classroom teaching.
